Cabinet members serve at the Governor's discretion and together form a constructive advisory board in assisting the Governor's in running the affairs of state, with reporting duties based on their respective agencies. Currently, the Governor’s Cabinet is comprised of Secretaries and Directors of nearly thirty agencies each of whom deal with particular issues the Governor deems as an important part of the overall health of our state and its people.


Alfredo Vigil, Secretary

Department of Health

Dr. Alfredo Vigil has 30 years of extensive clinical and management experience specializing in family medicine, geriatrics, emergency medicine and reproductive health issues. He has worked in private practice, community health centers, hospitals and other non-profit organizations. For the past five years, he was chief executive officer of El Centro Family Health, a non-profit primary care organization in Española.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Vigil has been actively involved in community service, volunteering for EMS programs throughout Northern New Mexico and serving on the boards of numerous community and public organizations, including the Community Wellness Center in Taos and Voices for Children in Albuquerque.Governor Bill Richardson appointed Dr. Vigil in June 2007 to serve as secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health, the largest state agency. The Department of Health works with New Mexicans to prevent disease, prepare for health emergencies, promote sound health policy, protect vulnerable individuals and provide support and advocacy to individuals with disability.

Dr. Vigil continues to serve on the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine clinical faculty, a position he has held for 25 years. He is a professor of Family Medicine.He has been a leader in the areas of professional recruitment and retention, medical ethics and health-care access for New Mexicans. He was a member of the New Mexico Medical Board and the EMS Licensing Commission.Dr. Vigil is a graduate of UNM’s School of Medicine and performed his family practice residency at UNM as well. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the National Public Health Leadership Institute at University of North Carolina. He is also a diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice.

Dr. Vigil is a 56-year-old native New Mexican who lives in Taos.
