Cabinet members serve at the Governor's discretion and together form a constructive advisory board in assisting the Governor's in running the affairs of state, with reporting duties based on their respective agencies. Currently, the Governor’s Cabinet is comprised of Secretaries and Directors of nearly thirty agencies each of whom deal with particular issues the Governor deems as an important part of the overall health of our state and its people.


Fred Mondragon, Secretary

Economic Development Department

Governor Bill Richardson appointed Fred Mondragon Cabinet Secretary of Economic Development in May of 2007. Mondragon comes to the Department from the Office of Economic Development, City of Albuquerque, where he led such visionary projects as a sustainable economic development plan and a technology summit. As director of this organization, Mondragon participated in the recruitment or expansion of Tesla Motors, Verizon Wireless, Eclipse Aviation, Advent Solar, and Albuquerque Studios.

Mondragon served three terms in the New Mexico House of Representatives where he represented District 16 in the Albuquerque Valley. During his tenure in the Legislature, he specialized in tax issues, health care concerns, economic development, and higher education.

Mondragon was the founding chairman of the Governor’s Science and Technology Commission. As CEO of Fred Mondragon and Associates, he specialized in technology transfer and changes to federal policies that make it simpler for businesses and government laboratories.
