Cabinet members serve at the Governor's discretion and together form a constructive advisory board in assisting the Governor's in running the affairs of state, with reporting duties based on their respective agencies. Currently, the Governor’s Cabinet is comprised of Secretaries and Directors of nearly thirty agencies each of whom deal with particular issues the Governor deems as an important part of the overall health of our state and its people.
Hugh Dangler, Chief Public Defender
Governor Bill Richardson appointed Hugh Dangler as Chief Public Defender, effective July 1, 2008. Hugh has been a public servant since his graduation from UNM Law School in 1988. He served as a law clerk to the first female Justice of the Supreme Court, Mary Walters, and then for Joseph Baca. He then served several thousand citizens as a practising trial attorney. He has previously served as Training Director to the statewide Public Defender, as well as District Defender for the Santa Fe and Taos offices.
Dangler hopes to contribute to a legacy of justice in the courtrooms of New Mexico as well as building cooperative solutions to the problems of poverty and addiction which underlie 90% of all crime.
Dangler is married to Jane Stacey and has two daughters, Eliza and Sonja. They have one dog and the dog prefers it that way.
