The New Mexico Environment Department’s (NMED) mission is to protect and restore the environment and to foster a healthy and prosperous New Mexico for present and future generations. We implement our mission guided by four tenets:
(1) Science: Using the best available science to inform our decision-making in protecting public health and the environment; (2) Innovation: Employing creative engineering and technological solutions to address environmental challenges; (3) Collaboration: Engaging communities and interested stakeholders in environmental decision-making outcomes; (4) Compliance: Ensuring meaningful compliance with state regulations and permits; leveling the playing field through enforcement.
The Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI) Director is appointed by the Governor and serves at the pleasure of the Governor, and works closely with the Cabinet Secretary, Deputy Cabinet Secretaries, Division Directors and Bureau Chiefs. The OSI Director maintains a robust portfolio of critical duties while supporting cross-cutting Department and Division priorities, goals and deadlines. This OSI Director directly leads a team of approximately four fulltime equivalents (FTEs) program coordinators: (1) a scientific program coordinator who focuses on cross-cutting scientific matters (e.g., per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination); (2) an innovation program coordinator who pursues and leverages federal funds and public/private partnerships in pursuit of administration priorities; (3) a constituent services program coordinator who focuses on the needs of executive agencies, the Legislature, and the public; (4) an equity program coordinator who focuses civil rights and environmental justice.
The OSI Director also leads external and internal collaboration efforts to deliver work products related to the Department’s strategic plan, budget, performance measures, employee engagement, etc. The Department’s strategic plan, budget information, performance measures and employee engagement reports are found here (https://www.env.nm.gov/performance-measures)
The ideal candidate must have demonstrated leadership experience in business acumen, leading people, managing change, driving results, and building coalitions. The ideal candidate
must demonstrate an understanding of outcome-based results related to the nexus between budget and policy. In addition, exceptional customer service while working in structured and unstructured environments and managing multiple projects with competing deadlines is a critical skill for the OSI Director. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional communication skills, both oral and written, knowing how to effectively communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders. Finally, the ideal candidate should have a passion for the protection of the public health of New Mexicans and their natural environment.
The Governor’s Office and Department expect to fill this position as soon as possible. The salary for this position is between $85,000 and 90,000 annually.
