Gov. Lujan Grisham statement on Trump campaign stop in New Mexico
SANTA FE β Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday issued the following statement ahead of President Donald Trumpβs scheduled visit to Rio Rancho for a campaign rally:
“The president has demeaned, demonized and discriminated against Hispanics, immigrants and diverse communities every single day he has been president. Undoubtedly his remarks in New Mexico tonight will be more of the same. Undoubtedly he will claim to have done great things for workers and families in this state. Meanwhile, he didnβt raise the minimum wage for the first time in a decade; he didnβt double investment in small businesses; heβs not working to invest in renewable energy jobs, not embracing an all-of-the-above energy approach that will protect and provide for all workers, all companies, all American investments; he didnβt provide important expanded tax credits for working New Mexico parents; he didnβt provide training and economic development funding for coal plant workers in Farmington β we did that. The president, through his βtax cut,β actually raised taxes on many New Mexicans. My administration stepped in to protect New Mexicansβ paychecks. And weβre going to keep fighting for New Mexicans, while the president can talk all he likes. His words ring hollow in a place like New Mexico, a state whose hard-working, multicultural identity repudiates the ideology he champions.
βTonight I will be welcoming civic leaders from Deming and Luna County to the governorβs residence, where we will celebrate and honor their humanitarian work in responding heroically to the border crisis this year β a crisis the president has exacerbated at every turn through his cruel and inhumane border policies, policies that injure not only vulnerable asylum-seeking families with children but trade relationships, economic development and public safety. Community leaders in Deming and Luna County fed and clothed needy children; Donald Trump locked them in cages. Deming and Luna County are shining examples of apolitical public service, the sort of service every elected official and community leader must strive for in a crisis situation. New Mexico border communities didnβt hesitate. They stepped up. They saved lives.
βI am greatly looking forward to the opportunity to shine a light tonight on those New Mexicans who have demonstrated and lived the very best of New Mexico values β open arms; compassion for your neighbor; help in a time of need, no questions asked. The current occupant of the White House has shown us he knows nothing of those values. He knows nothing of the work New Mexicans are doing every day to make this state a better place for children, for families and for workers, work he and his administration have made more difficult at every opportunity.β
